The western band of St. Sebastion's College was formed in 1980 when Mrs. Carmen Dharmaratne was the music teacher.The band had only drums, melodicas and piano accordians, as many leading instruments. The band grew and participated in band competitions bringing honour to school. On one occasion the college band was in attendance at the German embassy day and had the privilege of playing the German Anthem.
In 1990, Mr. Jude Fernando was appointed Master-in-charge and the band, in 1992 came 1st at the education mobile week. The band also participated in the National day celebrations.
In 1994, the band transformed into fully equipped brass band with 4 side drums, 1 tenor drum, 1 bass drum, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones and 2 euphoniums. In the year 1995, Mr. Nadeesha Peiris was appointed as Master-in-charge.
In year 2003 when the Reverend Priests took over the administration of the school, Rev. Fr. Prasad Niranjan Fernando was appointed the Priest-in-charge of the band. It was during his period that perfectionism blossomed and as a result at the bands stunning performances many an audience were mesmeriged.
In year 2005 the western band organized a band fiesta "VIVACE ED TRIONFALE" to mark its 25th annversary celebrations. The band attends and performs at school functions such as sports meet, First holy communion, prize day, christmas carols and specially the feast of St. Sebastion's church, Moratuwa.
Today while Rev. Fr. Prasad Niranjan Fernando functions as the priest-in-charge, Mr. Nadeesha Peiris does an invaluable service as the Teacher-in-charge, Mr. Nandakumara helps as the instructor, Master Chameeka, the band leader (07/08) carries the Mace........
